STI Screening

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a common concern, particularly when starting a new relationship, after having new sexual partners, or when a person is experiencing symptoms.

The most common STI, and the easiest to contract, is Chlamydia.

We test for chlamydia by taking a swab from the vagina or cervix, or through a urine sample. The same sample will also be tested for Gonorrhea. The results of these tests are generally available within 48 hours from the time that the sample arrives in the lab.

We will offer to test for chlamydia and gonorrhea when you come to our clinic for a Pap test or for a contraceptive insertion, and we do this testing routinely when you have an unplanned pregnancy and are considering an abortion. If you have BC health insurance, there is no cost for testing.

If you test positive for chlamydia or gonorrhea, we will provide you with a course of antibiotics and offer follow-up if needed. We are required by public health to report these infections so that trends of infection and effective treatment can be monitored.

Other STIs include Syphilis, HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. If you are concerned about these conditions, please speak with your physician.
